Owls Class at The Study Nursery and Pre-School
Children become an Owl the September after they turn 3. However, those Owls joining from Sparrows will start to transition from July onwards. The class is led by Miss Fair and is supported by Miss Williams and Mrs Roshan. Your child will be allocated one of these teachers as their keyworker to support your children and record his/her progress throughout the year.
In Owls we aim to provide a sensitive balance of structured adult led-learning with child-led/initiated learning and play. Children are encouraged by adults to believe in their ability to learn and develop as well as recognise they have ‘a choice’. Although adult expectation is high, learning objectives and goals are achievable through growing independence. Literacy and Numeracy are explored in greater depth through smaller group or 1:1 adult led activity and tailored to each child’s unique learning style.

Nursery Specialisms
Forest School
The nearby wooded area and Hogsmill river within Green Lane recreation grounds, provides a wonderful opportunity to explore and learn new skills in all weathers. Children are encouraged to develop gross and fine motor skills by climbing trees and swinging, using various tools to hammer, chisel and dig, and in the colder months sit around a fire toasting marshmallows and drinking hot-chocolate! Owls particularly enjoy the hammock that we hang between the trees and finding areas to create dens.
Music
Mr Hassan, our music specialist, visits the children weekly. Music continues to play an important part in our curriculum for Owls as they continue to develop and show off their language skills. Singing remains a wonderful way to encourage children for whom English is an additional language or who are simply shy, to participate with much more confidence. Through singing a wider range of songs and rhymes, alongside well-loved traditional Nursery Rhymes, children continue to be exposed to new vocabulary and will use it with growing confidence.
Using shaker eggs, claves and drums is now a wonderful way for children to explore rhythm, rhyme and phonics.
Physical Education
Mrs Cropley has become a firm favourite to the Nursery children and is our PE teacher. She teaches the children once a week and works on developing their balance and co-ordination and listening skills through fun and engaging sessions. The children particularly enjoy following trickier 2 part instructions and attempting the courses set up that include crawling under and jumping through or in moving hoops.
French
Mrs Bekkaoui comes to the class once a week and delivers a fun and interactive language lesson. It continues to be pitched at a level that is accessible to your child, but we find that the words being taught, are being retained and remembered!
